Stereo Journey... part the second
In the eighties, the science of concert sound really matured. Live music moved closer to being music and away from being a social event, though partying continued...
Frazer Smith... The Roxy (1/11/80) ...Phil Hulett, Marcy Morrison, and a few others were there to see the LA radio icon.
Peter Gabriel... The Greek (80)... Apparently, most of KSUL were there: Phil, Remy, Tim Guebert, even Ray Shulman of Gentle Giant (later prez of Atco records). The theatre was dark and the band entered from the audience side, each wearing miner's headlamps. Sound quality from Altec's Stanley Screamer speakers was outstanding.
Fischer Z... The Whiskey (80) A small crowd of dedicated fans including me and Doug.
Genesis... Long Beach Arena (80) Not bad for an arena show. Clint was there too.
Plastics... The Roxy (07/02/81) We got some rocking pixof the wacky Japanese group that night.
King Crimson... The Roxy (81) Me and Rod Smear caught this show. I got in trouble for taking photos.
Wall of Voodoo... The Roxy (81) Me and John Hays witnessed an orgy of noise and of slam dancing.
Renaissance... Perkins Palace (81) This time I sneaked right up to the stage and snapped great pix with my mini camera.
Steve Hackett... The Roxy (11/28/81) Sold-out show from obscure cult band had Me, Tim, Kim, and Gloria bowing down before their brilliance. Gloria said they were really good looking guys too.
Peter Gabriel... Universal Amphitheatre (82) He invited a few fans to dance onstage for "Kiss of Life."
Mike Oldfield... Santa Monica Civic (82) Emotive guitar and massive drums turned me into Maynard Krebbs ("Dobie, I'm gettin' a little misty.")
Bill Nelson... Fenders, Long Beach (82) KNAC's Doug "Adams" introduced the show featuring the intriguing British guitarist who was plagued by sound problems.
The Residents/Wall of Voodoo... Perkins' Palace(10/30/82) Weird stage show told the Mole Man saga.
Penn Gillette narrated until he offended the band. He was subsequently bound, gagged, and tied to a chair.
King Crimson... Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre (6/09/84)
The B-52's... Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre (8/04/89)
