KSUL & Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
On Friday, June 6, 1980, the KSUL staff and listeners boarded a bus in the turnaround in front of Long Beach State. The destination was the ABC Studios in Hollywood where we were part of the audience for a, then, new late night television show called "Fridays" -- ABC's short lived answer to Saturday Night Live. The "real" reason we were all so excited about going to this "TV show" was that the musical guest for that night's show was Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers - who at the time - was just out of a nasty lawsuit with his record company and was back with a new album -- "Damn the Torpedos". Our group were the last to be let into the studio, but ended up in the first few rows where we got to see TP and the boys do, the classic, "American Girl' and a new song "Shadow Of A Doubt (Complex Kid)".
Both songs are featured in the new Peter Bogdanovich documentary "Runnin' On A Dream: Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers" and included on the bonus CD that comes with the 3 DVD package.
I have yet to wade through the hours of material included with this great documentary, but from what I've seen so far, this package is well worth the price if you are a TP fan.

It was a lot less fun if you were at an oblique angle to the stage like I was! Petty? Eh. Now Ultravox at CBS' No Holds Barred taping, THAT was memorable!
(Not to be critical. Who, me? But this must be the worst blog site on the planet. I don't even remember how to post in this thing. Yet I have the urge to rant! I should really start a new blog someplace...
As an IT person I respect simplicity and ease of use.)
I would expect the Ultravox vs.Tom Petty comment from someone that holds "progressive" music to such a high level. Although I like ALL kinds of rock, I tend to lean towards music that has a more direct connection to the "originals" - Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly and Elvis. I was sparked to life with the Beatles who also shared that approach. To each his own....
I'll be waiting for the 3 hour documentary on Ultravox by Peter Bogdanovich or Martin Scorsese.
I'm thinking that the bus ride up to the studio was probably not to your liking either. When the bus doors opened at ABC, it was much like the van doors opening in "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" - another rock & roll movie void of any progressive rock.
As for this blog site.....I agree it's a little hard to maneuver, but it's also the most used blog site on the planet.
